A God Who Weeps
Heavenly Father’s tears reveal how deeply He loves His children and longs for connection.
Most people don’t picture God as emotional. Powerful? Yes. Perfect? Of course. But crying? Feeling heartbreak? That can be hard to imagine—until we see how deeply He loves His children.
God weeps because He loves us and longs for us to choose Him and each other.
In Moses 7, Enoch sees a striking contrast. Satan spreads darkness and laughs. God looks at His children—and weeps.
“And it came to pass that the God of heaven looked upon the residue of the people, and he wept.”
(Moses 7:28)
Enoch is confused. How could a perfect, eternal God feel sorrow? God explains that His children were created with agency. He wants them to choose Him and to love one another—but many don’t. God’s tears don’t come from anger. They come from heartbreak.
God understands pain because He feels it. He knows rejection. He knows what it’s like to love deeply and not be chosen. He weeps when His children turn away from Him or hurt each other, not because He stops loving them, but because He loves them perfectly.
“No matter how dark your days may seem… your Heavenly Father has not forgotten you. In fact, He loves you, with an infinite love.”
—President Dieter F. Uchtdorf
Understanding God this way helps us see that choosing Him isn’t about fear or pressure—it’s about relationship. God wants closeness with us. As we choose Him, that relationship grows stronger, and His love flows more naturally into our relationships with others.
Reflection Question:
How does knowing that God feels sorrow and love change the way you see Him? How does it change the way you see yourself?
Small Application:
Today, choose one way to turn toward God—through prayer, kindness, forgiveness, or obedience—and notice how it influences how you treat others.
